...looking forward to meet everybody & the inspration of Barcelona!
I'm a Dutch artist, my name is Agnes den Hartogh, and I work and live most of the time in Italy (border Tuscany/Umbria) Here, near the Lake Trasimeno, is my studio Tipografia Sperimentale, a playground for al experimental printing techniques; here I work in the most complicated way with different layers of monotype and collage- the opposite of a 5 minute sketch.

a quick sketch:
and an example of a complicated proces:
But: every artwork start with sketches. My favorite subject is architecture. I travelled a lot and everywhere I captured my expressions in quick pen drawings.
The BCN2013-blog and the participants make me feel hungry! Let's share the good things & the inspiration! See you in Barcelona...

Hi, everyone! My name is Suma CM. I'm excited to visit Barcelona for the first time ever -- and to reconnect with friends old and new from the Lisbon and Santo Domingo symposia. I'm hoping to build on what I learned there and to use some of those techniques in Barcelona.

To answer Suhita's "What's in your sketchbag?" question, here's a look at (some of) what I'm bringing along. Barcelona symposium prep: materials

Barcelona symposium prep: sketching apron
The apron modification was inspired by what Inma was using in Santo Domingo -- thanks for the idea! More details about my trip prep/materials are on my blog.

Here are a few of my sketches from earlier this year.

As before, my husband is coming along for the (bike) ride and will be exploring the city on two wheels while we sketch. Here's the blog post on his adventure in Santo Domingo.

See you all very soon!

Hi dear friends,
from Rabastens, a cute village near Toulouse (France) where I live. My name is Vincent Desplanche, I work as an illustrator, mostly for children books, since almost twenty years. I love to go sketching since such a long time, even longer. My favorite subject :  mountains. The Barcelona's symposium starts in a pinch of days, next thursday. I feel really excited to attend to this 4th edition and to see all of you, brilliant sketchers from the whole world, in flesh and bones. I expect also a lot from the workshops and sketchcrawls. So impatient that I won't sleep quietly till this day.
In order to show you the corner of the world I live in, I did the following sketches yesterday, by the sunday torpor. I used color pencils and Neocolor wash on A4 double pages.
See you very soon.

The village houses huddled under the hot july sun

The plane-tree rows cast their shadow on the central allee

It's the siesta time, the narrow streets are empty

You'll find them on  workshop blog: 'Hither, thither and yon' at http://thitherandyon.blogspot.co.uk

And if you're not participating in one of my workshops you're still welcome to read the blog.

Comments welcome!

Hi everybody!

I'm Úrsula, an architecture student from Madrid. I'm already getting ready to go to Barcelone!! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and drawing by your side! I'll be arriving tomorrow, I think in time for the minisketchcrawl of La Sagrada Familia.

I'm trying to decide if I go minimalist and take only my pilot parallel pen and the waterbrush with me or I take  my hole bag of supplies (Emily calls it the Mary Poppins Bag)... but I think it's too heavy and it's soooo hot I'm not up for it... any thoughts from people that are already in Barcelone??

Well here are some of the drawings I have done lately...

You will notice I really like to do panoramics and I make my own sketchbooks to choose my own formats and papers. That's why you can see the binding in one of the drawings :) Lately I use more and more colours but I also love doing the Black&White drawings

See you tomorrow!!!

"From 10 July to 27 September, the Sala Ciutat (C/Ciutat, 2, Barcelona) is holding the exhibition Sketching Barcelona, a collection of city sketches based on the visual creations of various sketchers who participated in the successful Carnets de voyagecollection produced by Barcelona City Council.

Under the slogan ‘Barcelona Inspires’, it offers over 200 scenes from the everyday life of 15 neighbourhoods. They are based on the sketchbooks of these contemporary chroniclers who offer a journey through Barcelonabased on several personal representation techniques.
The exhibition invites visitors to go round the most characteristic parts of the city's neighbourhoods through the pencil, ink, ballpoint and watercolour annotations and handwritten commentaries from each of the 15 artists.
For each neighbourhood the Sala Ciutat has put on display between 12 and 15 reproductions of double-page spreads from books in the collection. The graphics and typography used in Sketching Barcelonareflects the sketcher's world and the handwriting that characterises it. The sketches are accompanied by annotations taken from the books, which provide commentaries on the sketches.

Prize-winning collection
The travel sketchbook Voltant per Sants, by the Barcelona illustrator Víctor Martínez “Swasky”, received the International Award at the XIII Rendez-vous du carnets de voyage de Clermont-Ferrandin France. This award, from Europe's most prestigious travel book literature and publishers' event, was in recognition of the creativity and innovation found in the Sants neighbourhood volume of the collection published by Barcelona City Council.
The City Council collection had two more nominations at the rendez-vous, one for "Un dia al Born" and the other for "Passejant per Horta".
The Quaderns de viatgecollection, which consists of 9 books, has sold 11,572 copies in all. It began in 2009 with ‘Un dia al Born’, which has sold nearly 3,000 copies in three editions. Others that have been very well received are ‘Tombs pel Barri Gòtic’ (2011) with 2,030 copies sold, and ‘Redescobrint l’Eixample’, with 1,149 copies sold. The latest book in the collection is ‘Una mirada a Sarrià’.
The authors, by neighbourhood, are Juliet Pomés (El Born), Stephane Carteron (El Gòtic), Swasky (Sants), Manel Andreu (Poble Sec Montjuïc), Pep Monserrat (Gràcia), Òscar Julve (Horta), Sagar (Eixample), Imapla (Barceloneta), Santi Sallés (Sant Gervasi), Mireia Zantop (Sarrià), Juliet Pomés (Les Corts), Eduardo Vicente (El Putxet), Lluïsot (El Raval), Miguel Herranz (Nou Barris) and Bernat Cormand
The Sala Ciutat exhibition is the highlight to a year in which the sketcher phenomenon has featured prominently in the city, including workshops on urbansketching with BCNDibuixa, a programme with numerous public activities to encourage awareness of urban illustration."

THANK YOU

The Symposium is around the corner, and we think it is time to thank everybody that has been involved in the organization for the effort they have put into this huge event.

We want to give our warmest thanks to our people in Barcelona: Yadira Reyes, Marta Castro, Daniel Castro, Eduardo de Vicente, Isaac Duenyas, David Ramírez, Shiem, Swasky, Sílvia Xicola, César Caballud, Miguel Herranz, Sagar Fornies and Lapin. Everybody has been involved as much as their circumstances allowed. We know how much time and effort this event demanded, and we deeply appreciate all of their efforts to make it a great success.

We also want to thank the USK Board, ElizabethAlley, Gabi Campanario, Jason Das and Orling Domínguez for their support across the ocean. It has been really helpful to have their insight and experience with similar issues on previous Symposiums. Their advice and assistance, as well as being part of the team, has been critical for the success of the organization. We also want to say thankyou to the Workshops Committee for their work choosing such a great bunch of instructors. And we want to give our special thanks to Gabi Campanario and Orling Domínguez, for their hard work, involvement and contributions.

Thankyou also to our sponsors and contributors, to the Barcelona City Council, Sant Lluc and the CCCB for supporting us financially, and providing us with excellent materials and logistics. We are grateful for having some of the best premises in Barcelona to host our Symposium.
Finally we want to thank all of the instructors, lecturers and attendees for their enthusiasm in being the essential part of this event, and because without them the Symposium would not take place. We know the expectations for Barcelona are very high, and we hope the Symposium will live up to them. We are doing our best to make it a great experience.

Looking forward to meeting all of you and drawing together in just a few hours!

One day to go...

The Symposium only opens tomorrow, July 11th,  but the city is already teeming with sketchers. It's exciting enough to be in Barcelona, but to be in Barcelona AND meet sketchers everywhere you look is wonderful. I came in late and missed part 1 of the 3 park sketchcrawl this morning, but still caught the rest of it.

Jumping right into drawing La Sagrada Familia as my first sketch in Barcelona was hard. That might be when I drew so many of them.. just have to keep at it till you get it right!

Walking down some more, we sketched the La Pedrera building, one of the most gooey buildings I have ever seen.

it's where I met suhita, the symposium correpondant, for the first time. I'm impressed, she's quick!! bcn2013usk
than came the time for a tipical catalan dish: "arroz negro", yummy! bcn2013usk
and we walk until the "casa de les punxes" (of josep puig i cadafalch): bcn2013usk
I know that some sketchers continue until "passeig de gracia" and the "pedrera" (of antoni gaudi), but I had to go to the inauguration of the exhibition "sketching barcelona" in sala ciutat where the all collection of travel books published by city council is exhibit, included my last book "barcelona m'inspira".

10 am, time for the morning session of workshops. I follow Marina and Ea's class to their workshop in Marcat Boqueria which is already teeming with life. The group loosens up with quick gestural sketches from around the market. I do a couple of pages of sketches, take in their talk on negative space and then sketch my 2 favorite stalls in the market. One is a mass of colored juices, and somehow, sipping a glass of juice while sketching the scene makes for a better sketch! My other favorite shop is adorned with hanging legs of ham.

marcato_composite

I stroll out of the Mercato to see Melanie Reim's class out on the Rambla for her session entitled 'Channeling Picasso'. They're talking about expressive mark making and are creating wonderful pieces inspired my the teeming crowds on the Rambla.

A quick lunch break and it's afternoon demo time. I attend Ch'ng Kiah Kiean 'Dry Twig and Ink' demo where he talks about his tools and technique. He uses really unusual tools: a peeled and sharpened twig and chinese waterproof ink. He and his dad carefully peeled and sharpened a twig as a little gift for everyone in the demo. The sketchers give sketching with the twig a try. Just when they think they're producing pretty decent results, KK gives a demo...

demo_composite

Rain surprises everyone in the afternoon and Shari takes her Triad Symphony session indoors, into the inner courtyard of a church. They discuss building paintings on a base of just 3 primaries. Shari demonstrates how a 3 color palette can give you an endless range of exciting shades to work with. It's a fascinating coversation that I could learn so much from and it's is one of those times when I wish I could just stay through the entire workshop. Shari, don't be surprised if I pop back in tomorrow to catch the rest of that session!

shari_composite

It's time to go catch Inma and her class as they capture the Rhythm of the City. Inma's unique perspective on drawing architecture and using color makes for an interesting workshop. The group sketches Roman pillars and the view from the History Museum.

Heading back to the evening Drink and Draw session, I get totally lost in the labyrinth of the city, so I stop and sketch the beautiful Miro mural in the middle of the Rambla. So many people walk down the Rambla right over it everyday. Rarely do they notice the piece beneath their feet.

Tapas for dinner, and my day is done. And what a day it was...Looking forward to day 2 and 3!

Day 2 at the Urban Sketchers Symposium was off to an early morning start with a panel discussion with instructors from the previous day's workshops.

9am Panel discussion, CCCB

Eduardo Bajzek's 10am workshop was an eyeopener. Eduardo uses markers in such a painterly fashion. His two mantras are: 'Large to Small' and 'Mass not Line'.
Notes from the workshop 'Straight to Masses' by Eduardo Bajzek

Lynne Chapman's 'Sketches that Sing' workshop dealt with the use of color in non traditional ways, and with mark making.

Choni Naudin lead the Bookbinding demo at Sant Lluc. What a gorgeous setting it is for a workshop!

Inside Sant Lluc, Barcelona. Bookbinding demo

Norberto's 'Dynamic Ink' workshop was all about using non-waterproof ink in sketching. It was so liberating to draw and then see the water make some of the lines disappear.  I did a quick little sketch before heading out to the next workshop.

Norberto Composite

I just HAD to run over and catch an hour at Jim Richards' 'Life between Buildings: Capturing the Energy' workshop. What's not to love in a workshop that encourages you to draw the crowds. Have you ever drawn a crowd of people and noticed they look like layers of people floating around a page? Here's a little tip from Jim that I will never forget: however many people you have in a scene, all of their eye level, whether they're close or far from you, is at the horizon. We sketched the crowd at the Placa Catalunya: the tourists, the little kids, the balloon sellers and the pigeons.

Placa Catalunya, Barcelona

And a sketch in the early evening. The Sant Pere Nolasc church near CCCB, Barcelona. It's Friday and the crowds are already gathering at every bar and cafe.

If you're wondering why these posts go up in the wee hours of the morning, imagine this: 23 Urban Sketchers at one table. A dinner that arrived with long pauses between courses. Almost everyone at the table was sketching.

at 2:00pm starts the demo of kiah kiean, sketching with dry twig and chinese ink. suhita went already there yesterday, but listening to the people who attend to it the day before, I really wanted to see him in action. after a short time, not only the urban sketchers where surrounding him, but also tourists and curious in front of the cathedral. it's just magic what this man could do with a piece of wood and some cheap ink.
bcn2013uskbcn2013usk
meanwhile, since 10:00am, the 3rd day of sketchcrawl was going on in the born ditrict and the barceloneta. I decided to join at the 4:00pm meeting under the "peix" of the olimpic port, to have a look at how the public events were running out.
around 40 sketchers, half of them french, were chatting and sharing their sketchbooks. but after an hour, 2 sheriffs told us that it was forbiden to sit and stay there being a private area… nevermind, I lead the sketchers to the nearby olimpic village, and we stopped on "avinguda d'icària", under the strange sculpture of miralles there: some kind of iron dinosaurs.
bcn2013uskbcn2013usk
we well deserved a fresh beer, and to meet everybody at the drink and draw party at the cccb, before having a diner at a vegan restaurant following jason's recommendation. I guess that after 2 evenings eating burgers, I could eat something healthy for once…
